It is the single most common question we get from homeowners in Cherokee and Cobb County: "How often should I really be changing my AC filter?"
While the standard advice you'll hear is "every 30 to 90 days," the truth is that your filter replacement schedule is highly dependent on the type of filter you use, how many people live in your home, and whether you have furry friends running around. Changing your filter correctly is the cheapest and most effective way to prevent massive HVAC repair bills.
The General Timeline
The thickness (depth) of your filter plays the biggest role in determining how often it needs to be replaced.
Standard 1-Inch Filters
If your system uses a standard 1-inch thick pleated filter, the general rule is to check it every 30 days and replace it every 60 to 90 days max.
4-Inch Media Cabinets
If you have an upgraded media cabinet next to your furnace that takes a thick 4-inch or 5-inch filter, you only need to change these every 6 to 12 months due to their massive surface area.
Factors That Speed Up the Timeline
The "90-day rule" goes out the window if your home environment puts extra strain on the HVAC system. You will need to change your filter much closer to the 30-day mark if any of the following apply:
- You Have Pets: Dogs and cats shed fur and dander constantly. The HVAC return vents pull all of this directly into the filter, clogging it up rapidly.
- High MERV Ratings: A filter with a high MERV rating (like a MERV 11 or 13) has incredibly dense fibers designed to catch microscopic particles. Because the weave is so tight, it clogs up much faster than a cheap fiberglass filter.
- You Run the Fan Constantly: If your thermostat fan is set to "ON" rather than "AUTO", your blower motor is pulling air through the filter 24/7, catching dirt even when the AC isn't cooling.
- Allergies
