When you hire a contractor to replace your air conditioner or furnace, they don't just show up with a screwdriver and a new box. A full HVAC system replacement is a major mechanical, electrical, and structural construction project.
To ensure that the job is done perfectly, efficiently, and without damaging your property, HVAC Bee utilizes dedicated Installation Vans. These trucks are completely different from the vehicles our repair technicians drive.
Service Vans vs. Install Vans
In the HVAC industry, a company usually splits its fleet into two distinct types of vehicles to maximize efficiency.
- The Service Van: These are the "doctors" of the fleet. We discussed Service Van Stock previously. They are packed with hundreds of small electrical parts—capacitors, ignitors, sensors, and circuit boards—designed to diagnose and fix a broken system.
- The Install Van: These are the "heavy lifters." An install van is not designed to fix a broken part; it is designed to rip out hundreds of pounds of old machinery and cleanly install a brand new system. The stock inside reflects this heavy-duty mission.
Heavy Lifting & Safety Gear
The first thing you will notice inside an install van is the sheer size of the equipment.
Property Protection
Before we touch a single tool, we lay down heavy-duty neoprene floor runners and canvas drop cloths from your front door all the way to your furnace. The van carries stacks of these to ensure your hardwood and carpets are completely protected.
Appliance Dollies
A new furnace or condenser can weigh upwards of 200 pounds. Our install vans are equipped with heavy-duty appliance dollies, often with stair-climbing tracks, to safely extract the old unit from your basement or attic.
Brazing Equipment
To connect the copper refrigerant lines, installers use an Oxy-Acetylene torch setup. The van carries tanks of oxygen and acetylene, along with silver solder, to create leak-proof, permanent welds on the copper lines.
Vacuum Pumps
Before new refrigerant is added, all the air and moisture must be removed from the copper lines. Install vans carry powerful, heavy vacuum pumps and specialized micron gauges to achieve a perfect, deep vacuum.
Custom Sheet Metal Fabrication
Perhaps the most important part of an install van's stock is the raw material. No two houses are identical, which means you cannot simply drop a new furnace into an old house and expect the existing ductwork to match up perfectly.
The new air handler or furnace must be joined to your existing ductwork using a plenum and custom metal transitions. Because the exact angles and measurements aren't known until the old unit is ripped out, our installers carry flat sheets of raw galvanized steel, specialized snips, "drives," and "cleats."
The Art of the Install: Our lead installers act as on-site sheet metal fabricators. They will measure, cut, bend, and build a custom sheet metal transition right in your driveway to ensure the new equipment has a perfectly airtight seal with your home's ductwork.
